MTN’s growth Strategy: Ambition Strategy 2025 is anchored in building the largest and most valuable platform business with a clear focus on Africa. It aims to elevate the working environment of the IT department and commissioned Micdee to design and implement.
To deliver this, we provided a multi-disciplinary design. A design that encourages collaboration between teams and business growth. Together, we created an innovative work environment that conveys MTN’s brand values.
Designing for Doers
In the design of both floors, we recognized the Doers as the men and women of the IT Department who show up everyday in the pursuit of MTN’s ideals; contributing their bit to make sure MTN’s overarching vision of “enabling the benefits of a modern connected life to everyone” comes to life day by day.
After careful study of the demographics of employees working on both floors, we created a design scheme that merges the themes of “Africa” and “Technology” in a way that resonates with the users; hence providing an inspiring and motivating workspace that enhances creativity and collaboration.

Furniture Design: Enhancing Comfort and Aesthetics
The choice of furniture in this project was central to the design philosophy. Ergonomic furniture; including standing desks, mobile stools, benches, sofas, and versatile storage solutions, were carefully selected to prioritize the well-being and comfort of MTN's employees. These choices were deeply inspired by African craftsmanship.
Also, bespoke furniture pieces, such as modular workstations and collaborative seating, were adorned with traditional materials originating from Africa, such as the Aso-Oke and Adire fabrics. These additions aimed to reflect the rich cultural diversity and heritage of Africa, thus infusing the workspace with a unique sense of identity.
Creating Collaborative Communities
The redesign introduced an open-plan layout, completely redefining the workspace from a basic open arrangement of workstations.
Huddle corners, alternate work areas, and lounges were integrated, drawing inspiration from traditional African communal spaces, shared work areas encourage collaboration and a sense of community; laying emphasis on Relationships, a core value of the MTN brand.
Flexible work areas; Pulse Zones, complete with movable partitions and modular furniture, were introduced. This allowed employees to adapt spaces for various tasks and team sizes, reflecting the adaptability found in African cultures. They also served as dynamic spaces for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Infusing Creativity and Cultural Richness
The color palette on this project is a fusion of vibrant colors inspired by African textiles and calming neutrals. To further celebrate Africa's diverse cultures; custom themed murals, sculptures, and indigenous crafts were thoughtfully placed throughout the office.
These additions created a working environment that not only accommodated work but also celebrated the artistry and cultural heritage of the African continent. We also hid creative gems all around the office with the aim to inspire inquisitive minds and offer satisfaction upon realisation.
Honoring the Environment
The project's environmental consciousness was evident in every aspect. Materials like locally sourced wood and fabric, natural fibers, and sustainable flooring options were thoughtfully chosen to reduce the project's environmental impact while celebrating Africa's bountiful natural resources.
Energy efficiency was at the forefront, with the installation of motion-sensor lighting and energy-efficient appliances to minimize energy consumption, inspired by Africa's deep commitment to sustainability.
The comprehensive redesign of MTN's office space serves as a model for innovative, sustainable, and culturally rich workspace design. By focusing on these key aspects, this project has redefined the physical office environment, setting new standards for workplace excellence and celebrating the potential of design to enhance well-being, productivity, and sustainability while honoring Africa's diverse heritage.
It exemplifies MTN's dedication to its employees, its brand, and the rich cultural legacy of Africa.
